Opioids are well tolerated and inexpensive when used appropriately; however, dependence, misuse, and diversion of opioids have resulted in a tsunami of overdose-related deaths in the United States. While accounting for only 5% of the world's population, the United States accounts for 80% of oxycodone use and 99% of hydrocodone use. Opioid overdoseerelated deaths exceed traffic collisionerelated deaths in the United States.
