Gardening can be tough on your hands and wrists, especially with conditions like Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or Trigger Finger. At the Orthopaedic Institute of North Mississippi, our specialists can help you manage these conditions and keep gardening pain-free. Hand, wrist and elbow surgeon, Dr. Eric Lewis explains:
“Gardening should be therapeutic, not painful. With the right tools and care, you can enjoy your garden while managing wrist and hand issues. If you continue to have issues with your hand, wrist or elbow, give us a call.”
Quick Tips for Comfortable Gardening
1. Choose Ergonomic Tools
- Use padded handles and lightweight, long-handled tools to reduce strain.
2. Limit Repetitive Motions
- Alternate tasks, take breaks, and use your whole body to minimize wrist strain.
3. Low-Impact Gardening
- Raised beds, container gardening, and ergonomic weeding tools are great alternatives.
- Have a dedicated “gardening” brace, if it has been recommended that you use one.
4. Post-Gardening Care
- Rest, apply cold or heat therapy, and consider gentle hand massage to relax muscles.
- Single dose of NSAIDS, if your P.C.P allows you to take them
